Getting around

Universe Big Screen has four tabs along the top, each with its icon: Home (a house), Library (a grid), Media (photos) and Settings (a gear). LB and RB switch between them. Up from the top of a page reaches the tab bar, with the search glass, the power button and, while a game runs, its badge.

These pages name the buttons by their Xbox letters. The keyboard has a key for each one but HOME.

Pad Keyboard What it does
A Enter Plays, opens or picks what has the focus. Held on a game, it opens the game menu.
B Esc Goes back. Held, it opens the power menu.
X I Opens the focused game’s page.
Y F Adds the focused game to your favourites, or takes it out.
LB / RB Q / E Previous and next tab.
LT / RT PgUp / PgDn Previous and next section in Settings and on a game’s settings.
Start F1 The menu for what has the focus. On a game, that’s the game menu.
D-pad, left stick Arrow keys Move.
Right stick [ / ] Scrolls a screenful at a time.
HOME none Opens the dock over a running game (Playing).

The hint bar along the bottom lists the buttons the focused item takes, drawn as your pad prints them (Button glyphs). Where a button does something else, it says so.

Press A on the search glass in the tab bar. Search finds games and settings as you type.

Search over the home screen: the games whose title matches, and the settings that do

A on a cover plays the game, and Start opens its menu. A on a setting opens its page on that row. On the on-screen keyboard, X deletes the last letter and B closes search. A physical keyboard types straight in.

Hold B, or press A on the power button in the tab bar.

The Power menu: Quit Universe, Suspend, Reboot, Power off and Stay
  • Quit Universe closes Universe and the running game.
  • Suspend puts the machine to sleep. A running game keeps running.
  • Reboot and Power off ask first, and close the running game.
  • Stay closes the menu.

In a menu, Right opens a row marked ›, Left or B goes back, and Start closes the menu. A menu that changes a game’s setting can also offer Y, for all your games. In a question, B answers no.

A click or a tap moves the focus, and a second one acts like A. Buttons, tabs and menu rows act on the first. Press and hold works like holding A, and dragging and the wheel scroll. A right click on a cover opens the game’s menu, and a second one closes it; anywhere else it’s B.

The Switch 2 and PS5 looks are laid out differently: see Looks. There, a right click on a game does what pressing and holding it does.
